Windsock specializes in the sales and distribution of replacement windsocks. What started out as a retail brick & mortar business specializing in pilot supplies, has evolved into a vibrant online company which now focuses on our core namesake product, the windsock!
The Windsock is always striving to create innovative ways with which we can continue to serve our current and future customers better.
Originally founded by Joe Monaco in 1976 under the name of Jem Aero, the business slowly made a change from avionics repair to pilot supplies. Jem Aero eventually went into the wholesale side of the business and sold the retail store for a short time to Boda's Aero Mart. Boda was purchased by John & Joanne Italliano around 1993 and that was when the name was changed to Windsock Aviation & Pilot Supplies. In 2003, the Windsock retail store and name was purchased by Mike Mann, which allowed the Italliano’s to retire and enjoy some hard earned lifetime R&R. Since then, Windsock has evolved from a pilot supply retail store to its current status as a premium online store focused on windsock sales and distribution.
Meet the Business Owner: Mike Mann
Its amazing to think that after spending time, money and effort to be successful in a career, that you could possibly think of changing your path and going in a different direction. Well, it happens. I guess more that I thought.
After college, I was happily working in the medical field as a Critical Care Registered Respiratory Therapist working in ICU's from adult to neonates in addition to being a member of the trauma team. It was a very fufilling career to have the opportunity to help others, ease their pain and suffering and unfortunately, see folks that lost the good fight, move on to hopefully a better place.
That all changed one night, while sitting in my truck, watching airplanes line up, while working their way down to their destination at LAX. The site was so cool that I told myself I would at least like to give flying a try. My father was a Pilot/Navigator in the Army Air Corp and was trained for both the B-17 and B-29 so I had to give it a shot, so I thought, what the heck!
That demo flight experience was so amazing, it was life changing. From the moment I took off I was sold. It was that incredible! So, I sold a motorcycle, which paid for my private pilot license, and never looked back.
From that point, I focused on earning my commercial rating so I could start an air taxi service, Outback Flight Service, out of Fullerton, CA. This eventually led to a move to John Wayne Airport as the aircraft grew larger and more complex. As much as I enjoyed the experience, I eventually sold the business and bought the Windsock in 2003, when the unexpected opportunity came about which allowed me more time with my young family.
Though I will never lose the desire to fly and have enjoyed my time working for the airlines, charter companies and private individuals, like I said in the beginning...things change! Due to the sucess of Windsock's online store, I have devoted myself to continuing to serve those whom have helped me achieve this milestone, and I relish the opportunity to continue to expand this developing company.
